Marktgemeinde Moosburg

Moosburg is a market town in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in the Austrian state of Carinthia. Moosburg is located in the middle of the Moosburger Basin, a part of the Klagenfurt Basin.

The medieval parishes of Moosburg and Tigring covered almost the entire area of the Moosburg Basin or exceeded it in the west and north to the Glan River.

Excavations

The foundation walls of the wattle-and-daub church were uncovered in the middle of the 20th century and can be visited at Karolingerweg 1 in Sankt Peter.

In the Carolingian period, this place of worship was richly decorated with marble wattle and daub stones, with large cemetery adjoining on terraces (about 450 graves were located) to the east and southeast of the church. In the following period it was overbuilt in Romanesque-Gothic style. The building is mentioned in documents from 1217 and was destroyed by fire in 1879. At the triumphal arch to the apse there are four marble slabs next to each other as steps in the size of about 40 × 50 cm. The northernmost one has a peculiarity: it has a mill game carved on it. Finds from excavations and more detailed information are available at the Carolingian Museum in Moosburg.
